Working From Home.
I’ve posted about it before; about its glories and its suckitude, the highs and the lows. I’ve babbled about how easily it is to end up going days without seeing anyone except my husband, and how much I sometimes miss the camaraderie (and easy advice) of having colleague across the aisle.
The more I write, and the more Mark spends time at home (thanks to being a full-time University student again), the more it occurs to me that working from home isn’t all its cracked up to be.
It isn’t a free pass.
I have to work even harder than other people to make sure that I don’t mess up and get my privilege revoked. I have to do my best to remain motivated and alert. And God forbid you doze off! (Don’t worry – I never have!)
Some people are better suited for working from home, solo, than others. Mark? I think he works best with a constant clock and deadline to hit. He may procrastinate at the office, but at home it is waaaaay worse. I’m the same way, to some extent. But whereas he does not stress and has this weird sort of zen state about it; I am constantly freaked out about deadlines and whatnot. Pressure to the max!
Now, I’m singing that old David Bowie “Under Pressure” song in my head.
What was my point?
Oh – yeah. Staying motivated while working from home.
Because you see, I have a lot of hours to write right now. And Mark, he has even more. But we are not getting nearly enough work done and there must be a reason. We’re not motivated enough, I guess.
The first thing we need to do? Turn off Netflix. Yeah, totally. We leave that on all the time, watching various shows in the background while doing other things. Unfortunately, when its a program or movie I like, I end up watching more of that than writing. Mark, God love him, is even worse.
And other things end up falling to the wayside because I can’t waste precious time doing dishes or mopping, I must write today! and then oops… hours pass by.
After that, we need to prioritize. Shift the things we want to write and the things that NEED done around the house to the front.
And after that, just bloody DO it, as the Nike company used to say…sort of. We just gotta open up these documents and write, write, write!
(And not just Roleplay Stories, like I’ve been doing for weeks now…)
We can do it. We will do it. Yada yada.
