FdS: Doctor Who

What do you know? It is BACK!
Like I said before, this is definitely a topic better designed for Tumblr, home of all the Fandoms, but alas… my blog is here, not there, and so shall this post be.
So, here goes the second of what may yet turn into a recurring series here on JeezJosie.com.
For this episode, we’re doing Doctor Who (2005-Present).

  • Favorite episode: Ugh! Difficult. Because there are some epic ones in almost every series. Let me think… It would be easier to mention my least favorite episodes. In Series 1, with 9 and Rose, I loved “The End of the World” and liked “The Unquiet Dead”, the “Parting of the Ways” and “Bad Wolf”, but despite all the love for “The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances”, it isn’t amongst my favorites at all.

Then series 2, with Ten’s arrival, I’d say that “The Girl in the Fireplace” was one of the best (and to Hell with the folks who say this sucks and is out of character for the Doctor because of his wah-wah *looooooove* for Rose), as well as “School Reunion” (Sarah Jane! K9! Giles from Buffy!) and “Love & Monsters” which… well, I adore Elton & his little lady no matter what the rest of the world thinks.
And series 3 had the FABULOUS “Runaway Bride” (Donna *sob* I love you!) to start it off, and then Martha Jones, who I dig, came aboard. “Smith and Jones” was a clever way to bring in a new companion (especially after the wrenching send-off to Rose) and I love the side characters in “Gridlock”. The 3-part-punch of “Utopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords” kicked much ass, as well, but the best of these I think is “Blink”, which fucking terrified me in a way a comedic spacey-timey-wimey show never should have been able to do.
Series 4 means the return of Donna-fucking-Noble and I adore it. “Partners in Crime” sets up their chemistry-filled friendship perfectly, and “The Fires of Pompeii” features several of Donna’s best lines. “The Planet of the Ood” breaks my heart – especially in re-watching it – and of course, the first River Song episodes, “Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead”. “Midnight” had some creepy goodness in it too, but a lot of people dislike that one and I can understand why. “Turn Left”… epic. And then “The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End” … *sob* I can’t even.
There are a bunch of specials between 4 & 5, but they were only okay in general. I did like “Waters of Mars”, but I wouldn’t rank it amongst my favorite episodes.
Series 5 saw the arrival of Eleven and the Ponds. I am a sucker for a redhead and Matt Smith really grew on me, but at first it was very hard to like him. David Tennant was a hard act to follow.
The Blinking Angels’ return is pretty cool, and I liked “The Beast Below”, but I think my favorites in S5 were “The Lodger” and then the two-part finale, “The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang”.
In Series 6, I really was very meh about almost every episode. I was psyched to see Craig back (from “The Lodger” and this time, with his little baby, Stormageddon) but mostly, as much as I liked Rory and Amy and even Eleven (and River Song!) nothing jumped out at me as… amazeballs.
At least, we reach Series 7a & 7b. The first five (7a) feature Eleven & the Ponds. “The Power of Three” was good, and then I sobbed like a little baby when “The Angels Take Manhattan” concluded. Ugh. The last half of the season (7b) brought in Clara. Soufflé Girl. And I want to like her, but alas, I just don’t. I tried. I did, but something about her… her story, her voice, her everything. It grates on me. I’ll rewatch and see if she’s improved with time, but knowing that she is in S8 with Capaldi as Twelve, does not thrill me. That said, I did like “The Rings Of Akhaten” and “Nightmare in Silver”.
My aboslute favorite of all? The end of Series 4 – though I cried and sobbed and wept for Donna’s horrible fucking ending… I loved it. I hated it, but I l.o.v.e.d. it, you know?
  • Favorite villain: Daleks, because they are both horrifying and hilariously geeky-looking. Creatures of such immense power who have no mercy, have no consideration of history or art, who are just… ugh. Cold. But I also liked some of the stranger villains. The vampire-fish from the Ponds’ vacation in Venice were pretty spiff, too!
  • Favorite doctor: Ten. Definitely Ten. Except that I also adore Nine, a ton. And oh, gosh, I had a fondness for Eleven too, once he grew on me. But Ten, I guess. Of the modern Doctors… Ten. I would have run off with him in a heartbeat. I would have been his Donna 2.0, or hells, his naughty-naughty sex toy (unless my husband objected!). Mm… Yeah, he had the charisma that I think of when I imagine a character like “The Doctor”.
  • Least favorite “main character” of the show: Rose. I’m sorry, I’m sorry – I just don’t love her. I tried. And I surely don’t hate her as I did after the first time I watched S1 & S2. But she’s so… whiny, entitled, bratty, needy. She treats her mother and her boyfriend/best friend like crap for the “love” of an alien and has no compunctions about it. And though she has some real shining moments of humanity and – especially her cameos in later seasons – a strong evolution in the end… I just do not love Rose. Sorry.
  • Favorite “sidekick”: Donna. Donna Noble, as I’ve said before, rocks my world. Catherine Tate is a hilarious woman anyway, and her chemistry with David Tennent was undeniable but it was not all sexual tension and faux romance the way whiny Rose & unrequited Martha were. She was SO EXCITED to be a part of all his great daring-dos and she GREW from this self-important, aimless temp in Chiswick into this… universally aware, activist, righter-of-wrongs, bad-ass. She evolved. And then, at the height of her power and sacrifice… it was all taken away. All gone… and she was relegated to the corner to live and die as a brassy temp when for a few bright, shining moments, she was The Doctor-Donna and she was glorious.
  • Character you love to hate: The Master, perhaps. He was so masterfully portrayed by John Simm, running that line between brilliant and fucking insane. Yes, he wanted to destroy The Doctor (and like, everything else) but he was just so FUN to watch!
  • Favorite friendship: The Doctor & Donna. Period, end of Story. I could gif it, if you want, but basically… their back and forth, their repetoire, their laughter, their bickering. They were IT. The best friends… *sniffle*
  • Least favorite story-arc: Ugh… anything involving Clara. I just don’t get her, I don’t like her, I don’t even… ugh.
  • Favorite character death scene: It was not really a death scene, but when the Doctor had to take back Donna’s time-lordiness and burn away all memory of himself and her adventures and the amazing woman she had grown into…. I wept. I’m about to cry now, but that’s probably because I’ve written over 1000 words about fucking Doctor Who.
  • An abandoned or unanswered plot line that will always bug you: I don’t know that it was unanswered or whatnot, but I would give a bajillion dollars to have Donna back, as Doctor-Donna, and just let her… be. Follow her adventures. She would kick the multiverse’s ass, dang it! I want more Donna & Ten.

So, that’s that. In the can, as they say. What about you? Do you love Doctor Who? Do you love Donna? Hate her (if so, fuck you!)? Just kidding – but really – tell me about it below!

Signed, Josie
